What it is

What is Microsoft Intune?

Microsoft Intune is a cloud service for managing devices and applications. It lets a company require encryption, passwords, updates and security settings on laptops and phones, and remove company data if a device is lost or an employee leaves.

It works for company owned computers and for personal phones used for work. On personal devices Intune can protect only the work apps and data and leave the owner’s personal content alone.

Because Intune is part of Microsoft 365, it also works with Entra ID. A device can be required to be managed and healthy before it can open company email or files.

Intune is the control panel for how devices behave in your business. Instead of walking to each desk, an administrator defines the rules once and Intune enforces them, whether the laptop is in the office, at home or in a hotel.

It can manage Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS and Android, and it can work alongside on premises tools such as Configuration Manager when a business is part way through a move to the cloud.

Key features

What Microsoft Intune can do.

Compliance policies

Define what a healthy device looks like: encryption on, firewall on, a supported operating system and no jailbreak. Devices that fail can be blocked.

Configuration profiles

Push settings for Wi-Fi, VPN, printers, browsers, security baselines and hundreds of Windows policy options.

App deployment

Install and update Microsoft 365 apps, line of business apps and store apps without visiting the desk.

App protection policies

Protect work data inside apps like Outlook and Teams on personal phones, with copy and paste and save restrictions.

Windows update management

Control feature and quality update rings, so patches roll out in stages and critical fixes are not delayed.

Disk encryption and LAPS

Enforce BitLocker or FileVault and rotate local administrator passwords automatically.

Remote actions

Lock, restart, sync, reset passcodes, retire or wipe a device from the admin portal.

Reporting

Device inventory, compliance status and app install results for audits and troubleshooting.

How it works

How Microsoft Intune works.

01

Enrol

Devices join Intune when a user signs in, or automatically through Windows Autopilot.

02

Configure

Policies set encryption, passwords, firewall, updates and app rules.

03

Deploy

Apps and settings are pushed to devices without anyone visiting the desk.

04

Monitor

Compliance reports show which devices are healthy, and non compliant devices can be blocked.

Under the hood

What happens behind the scenes.

A device joins Intune through enrolment. On Windows this happens when the user signs in with a work account, or automatically through Autopilot. On iPhones and Androids, it happens when the user installs the company portal or when a device is registered by the business.

Once enrolled, the device regularly checks in with Intune and receives policies and apps. Intune reports back whether the device meets the compliance rules. Entra ID uses that result in conditional access, so a non compliant device can be refused access to company mail and files until it is fixed.

Business impact

How it benefits your business.

Intune reduces the chance that a lost laptop or unpatched computer becomes a data breach. Encryption, strong sign in and quick remote wipe mean the data on a lost device is not at risk.

It also lowers the cost of IT. Software installs, settings changes and updates happen remotely and consistently, so fewer visits are needed and fewer computers drift into unsafe states.

For businesses that allow personal phones, app protection gives staff flexibility and gives the company control over its data. That means you can support working from a phone without handing over control of the whole device.

Key benefits

The benefits at a glance.

Protect data on lost devices

Lock or wipe a laptop or phone remotely if it goes missing.

Consistent security

Every device gets the same encryption, update and firewall settings.

Safe personal phones

App protection policies cover work data without taking over a personal phone.

Less time on IT visits

Software and settings are deployed remotely.

Works with conditional access

Only compliant devices can reach email and files.

Easier audits

Reports show device status for insurers, clients and regulators.

Licensing: Intune Plan 1 is included in Business Premium, E3 and E5. Plans and features change, so we confirm current licensing with you before you buy.

In practice

What this looks like day to day.

A 40 person firm has laptops set up by hand, each slightly different. One goes missing in transit. With Intune, every laptop already has full disk encryption and a policy that requires a PIN. The lost device is marked for wipe, access from it is blocked, and the incident is recorded as a contained event, not a breach.

This is an illustrative example of how the feature is used, not a description of a specific client.

Avoid the common problems

Mistakes we see, and how we avoid them.

01

Enrolling without a plan

Mixing manual enrolment, imaging and policies leads to a mess. Design groups, naming and policies first.

02

Policies that conflict

Overlapping settings from baselines, profiles and old group policy can fight. We map them before they collide.

03

Ignoring personal devices

Unmanaged phones still read company email. App protection policies close that gap.

04

No offboarding step

Leavers keep company data on devices unless retirement and wipe are part of the process.

What is the difference between Intune and an RMM tool?

Intune manages settings, policies and apps from Microsoft 365. An RMM tool adds monitoring, scripting and patching. Many businesses use both, and we run both.

Can Intune manage Macs and phones?

Yes. Intune supports Windows, macOS, iOS and Android devices.

Will staff lose privacy on personal phones?

No. With app protection policies, we manage the work apps and their data, not the personal side of the phone.

Which plans include Intune?

Intune Plan 1 is included with Business Premium, E3 and E5. We confirm current licensing before we recommend a plan.

Can you move us from another device management tool?

Yes. We plan the move so devices stay protected throughout.
